A robot lawn mower is suitable only when the particular model can handle your lawn’s size, slopes, access routes and boundaries. Start with a sketch and measurements, then compare them with the installation manual. A garden survey is especially useful where lawns are steep, divided or bordered by ponds and steps.
Table of Contents
Measure the grass and available mowing time
Measure the actual grass area, excluding beds, buildings and paving. Record separate sections as well as the total. A maximum area rating is based on the manufacturer’s operating assumptions; a complicated layout or a shorter daytime mowing window can require a model with more capacity.
Do not select a mower solely because its advertised maximum equals your lawn size. Ask what schedule the rating assumes and whether the mower can maintain the lawn within the hours you intend to use it.
Check gradients and hazards
Measure the steepest slopes as a percentage: vertical rise divided by horizontal distance, multiplied by 100. Check both the working-area and boundary slope limits, because these can differ. A mower that climbs a slope within the lawn may be unsuitable where that slope reaches the perimeter.
All-wheel drive and terrain accessories may help on suitable models, but there is no universal gradient at which every garden needs them. Never assume an accessory raises the manufacturer’s approved slope limit. Wet grass, hollows and loose soil can also affect grip.
Follow the manual’s physical barrier and setback requirements beside water, roads, drops and other hazards. Obstacle detection and a virtual boundary do not replace required barriers.
Compare boundary systems at your site
| System | Site checks |
|---|---|
| Boundary wire | Permitted cable route, setbacks, passage width, isolated beds and guide-wire requirements |
| Satellite positioning | Sky visibility, trees and buildings, correction-signal method and supported alternatives in weak areas |
| Camera or other sensor navigation | Required lawn edges, lighting, surface recognition and the model’s operating restrictions |
Not every wire-free mower uses the same positioning system. For example, Husqvarna’s EPOS installation guidance distinguishes cloud correction, which requires the specified connectivity across the working area, from a compatible local reference station. Camera support and boundary-wire assistance are available only on selected models. These requirements should not be applied to every brand or model.
Measure passages and separated lawns
Measure the usable gap at its narrowest point, including the clearance the mower requires from walls and obstacles. There is no single minimum passage width for all robot mowers. Check whether the mower can travel to every area, return to its charger and cross any permitted path safely.
A disconnected lawn may need manual carrying and a supported secondary-area mode. Confirm that arrangement before buying, including how the mower behaves when it cannot return to the charger.
Plan the charging station and daily routine
The dock needs the model’s specified level base, approach clearance and suitable electricity supply. Use the supplied or approved power equipment and follow outdoor installation instructions; do not improvise extensions or expose connections to water.
Finally, plan time for clearing toys and branches, checking blades and inspecting the lawn. Keep people and pets out of the operating area as instructed. Schedule daytime mowing and check for wildlife before each session. A suitable robot mower can reduce routine mowing work, but it still needs supervision, maintenance and a safe installation.
