Perlite and vermiculite are both lightweight mineral granules added to potting mixes, but they do different jobs. Perlite mainly opens up the mix for air and drainage; vermiculite mainly holds moisture while still allowing some air. Understanding that difference is the key to choosing the right one.

What perlite does in a potting mix
