A robot mower’s coverage rating is a maximum lawn area under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. It is a starting point for choosing a machine, rather than a guarantee for every garden. Measure your grass area, then account for the layout, grass growth and the hours when mowing will be practical.

Measure the area that needs cutting

Break an irregular lawn into simple rectangles and triangles, calculate their areas and add them together. Subtract permanent beds, buildings and other areas the mower will not cut. Record separate lawn sections and their connecting routes as well as the total area.

Check whether a quoted figure means maximum maintained area, area covered in a particular operating period or another performance measure. Do not treat a square-metre coverage rating as an hourly cutting rate unless the manufacturer explicitly defines it that way.

Read the scheduling assumptions

Husqvarna explains that Automower work-area ratings assume particular operating conditions, with operating time covering mowing, searching and charging. Some models also have a fixed maximum daily cutting time. These details are model-specific and should be checked in the manual.

A lawn that fits an advertised maximum may need more daily operating hours than you want to allow. Work out a realistic daytime window around children, pets and garden use, and check for wildlife before mowing. Ask a dealer whether the chosen model can maintain your area within that window.

Compare navigation modes fairly

Systematic and irregular mowing can have different area ratings on models that support both. Compare the rating for the mode and equipment you will actually use. Satellite positioning does not automatically mean systematic mowing is available, and advertised percentage gains for one model should not be applied to other machines.

Boundary wire defines a permitted working area for compatible mowers. Buying extra cable does not increase the mower’s cutting capacity.

Adjust for seasonal growth

Grass can grow faster in favourable spring and summer conditions and slow during drought or cold weather. Adjust scheduling and cutting height within the manual’s limits, checking the finish instead of relying on one fixed programme all year. Do not force extra mowing on drought-stressed, waterlogged or frozen turf.

If grass is persistently left too long, first check the schedule, blade condition, interruptions and access to each area. A model working at its maximum approved time may be undersized, but blocked routes or poor setup can produce similar symptoms. Resolve those issues before replacing the mower.
