Horticultural grit: when it helps and when it does not

What horticultural grit actually does

Horticultural grit is a washed stone material sold in small grades for mixing into composts or spreading on the surface. It is not a fertiliser. Its main role is physical, although mineral composition can affect suitability for acid-loving plants: an appropriate particle grade and proportion can change the pore structure of a potting mix. The result depends on the other ingredients and the container’s drainage; a token handful does not guarantee free drainage. This is exactly what alpines and many rock-garden plants need, because they evolved on thin, rocky mountain soils where winter wet is the biggest killer. The RHS alpine growing guide is blunt: alpines “dislike consistently damp soil” and need “gritty, free-draining soil”.

When grit helps

In containers for alpines and other sharp-draining plants

The RHS recommends a free-draining 50:50 mix of soil-based, peat-free compost and horticultural grit or sharp sand for container-grown alpines. The appropriate mix depends on the alpine species and site; the aim is adequate drainage and air rather than a universal guarantee from one recipe. Raising the pot on feet or bricks helps keep its drainage holes unobstructed, which the RHS advises for all alpine containers. In damp parts of the UK, moving the container into the rain-shadow of a wall over winter further reduces the amount of water the compost has to cope with.

As a surface mulch on alpine and rock gardens

After planting, a layer of horticultural grit or gravel over the compost keeps the lower leaves and the neck of the plant dry, which reduces rot. It stops rain splashing muddy compost onto flowers and foliage, hinders weed seed germination, but should not be relied on to exclude slugs and snails. The RHS notes this mulch also mimics the natural scree conditions alpines come from, and it looks attractive in a rock garden or trough.

In rock garden and crevice planting mixes

For rock gardens, the RHS basic planting mix is one part loam, one part horticultural grit, and one part leafmould or coir. In crevice gardens, sandstone slabs are set vertically and the gaps filled with washed sharp sand, grit, or peat-free John Innes No1 with up to 30 percent grit by volume. The grit creates the sharp drainage and deep, cool root runs that these plants need, and the RHS says moisture is used more efficiently in the microclimates made by the rocks.

In homemade potting mixes for heavy garden soil

If you make your own potting mix from garden soil, the RHS advises that heavy clay-based soil should have its soil content reduced by about 10 percent, with sharp sand, grit, or bulky organic matter added in its place to improve drainage. This is a container-specific fix, not a way to improve open ground. The grit or sand opens up the mix so water can move through, but it does not add the nutrients or biological activity that organic matter provides.

When grit does not help

In open ground with heavy clay or waterlogging

Adding a thin layer of grit to a heavy clay border will not turn it into a free-draining alpine bed. The RHS is explicit: if your soil is heavy clay or tends to get waterlogged, it is best to grow alpines in containers rather than trying to amend the ground. Grit works by creating large pores, but in clay those pores can quickly become sealed by the fine clay particles, so the improvement is short-lived unless you add very large volumes and mix deeply. For most gardeners, raised beds or containers are more reliable than trying to dig grit into a clay border.

For plants that prefer consistently moist soil

Many common garden plants – hostas, astilbes, primulas, and most vegetables – grow best in moisture-retentive soil. Replacing a large share of moisture-retentive potting material with grit can reduce the water reserve. A surface grit mulch behaves differently and does not, by itself, remove the mix’s water-holding capacity. The RHS sources do not recommend grit for these plants; they recommend organic matter to improve structure and retain moisture. Grit is not a substitute for organic matter, because it does not hold water or nutrients.

When the soil is already free-draining

If you garden on sandy or gravelly soil, adding more grit is usually unnecessary. The drainage is already sharp, and the real problem is often lack of moisture and nutrients. In that case, the RHS advice for homemade mixes is to add more rich organic matter, not more grit. Adding grit to an already free-draining soil can make drought stress worse.

As a slug barrier

Do not choose grit on the assumption that slugs cannot cross it. Use it for an appropriate horticultural purpose and assess slug damage separately.

As a plant food or soil conditioner

Horticultural grit is not sold as a nutrient source. It does not improve soil structure in the way organic matter does, or increase biological activity. If your soil is poor, compacted, or lacking in organic matter, grit will not fix those problems. The RHS potting mix guide is clear that organic matter “adds nutrients as it’s broken down and creates air spaces so roots can breathe” – grit only does the air-space part, and only in the right context.

Decisive checks before you buy or use grit

  • Check the grade: horticultural grit is sold in different particle sizes. Finer grades mix well into potting compost; coarser grades are better for surface mulches and crevice infill. Look for “washed” and “horticultural” on the bag – builders’ sand is not a substitute because it can contain lime and fine particles that clog drainage.
  • Match the plant: only use grit for plants that need sharp drainage, such as alpines, succulents, Mediterranean herbs, and some bulbs. For moisture-loving plants, leave it out.
  • Match the situation: grit is most effective in containers, raised beds, rock gardens, and crevice gardens. In open ground, it is rarely worth adding unless you are building a dedicated scree bed from scratch with a deep base layer.
  • Do not overdo it: more grit is not always better. A 50:50 mix is the RHS starting point for alpines in containers; other recipes use different proportions for specific soils or crevice plantings. Those figures are not a universal 10–30 per cent rule for all potting composts.

Horticultural grit is a precise tool, not a general soil improver. Use it where sharp drainage and dry surface conditions are the goal, and skip it where moisture retention matters more.
