Why filling a raised bed entirely with compost is wasteful
Bagged multipurpose compost is designed for pots and seed trays, not as a structural fill for a large raised bed. It is largely organic matter, which breaks down over one or two seasons, causing the bed to slump and leaving you with a lower growing level than you planned. The RHS advises filling raised beds mainly with soil, because soil does not break down and slump in the way that garden compost or potting compost does. Using compost as the sole fill also wastes money: a deep bed can hold hundreds of litres, and buying enough bagged compost to fill it is rarely economical. The practical approach is to reserve good compost for the upper root zone, where most vegetable and flower roots actually grow, and use cheaper, more stable materials below.
What to use as a base layer
For deep, ground-supported beds over 50cm (20in), the RHS describes using suitable subsoil or rubble below the growing layer, after setting aside any useful topsoil. This can reduce the amount of growing mix needed, but filler does not resolve blocked drainage or waterlogged ground. Use clean, suitable material, and avoid rubble in planters on legs or structures not designed for its weight. Inverted turves laid in the base will rot down slowly and add some organic matter. If you do not have rubble or subsoil to hand, coarse woody prunings, small logs or twiggy material can be used as a lower filler, but be aware that they will decompose and the bed will sink over time. Avoid using fresh grass clippings or kitchen waste in thick layers, as they can become slimy and anaerobic. Cardboard or newspaper can be laid at the very bottom to suppress weeds, but only as a thin layer, not as a bulk filler.
Layering without burying good compost
The key is to keep the nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive compost in the top 30–45cm (12–18in), where most plant roots are active. Below that, use the base materials described above. Measure the depth first and reserve the full growing layer required by your crops. Use lower-cost filler only in the space beneath that layer, and only where its weight, cleanliness and drainage suit the bed; do not allocate a fixed fraction of every bed to filler. Then add a growing mix of roughly seven parts topsoil, three parts organic matter such as garden compost or well-rotted manure, and two parts sharp sand. This is the general potting mixture suggested by the RHS for most raised beds. For alpines, bulbs and herbs that need sharper drainage, double the proportion of sand. Leave the bed filled to about 5cm (2in) below the rim, firm it down, and allow it to settle for a couple of weeks before topping up if necessary.
If your bed is shallow, say 30cm (1ft) or less, you may not need a separate base filler at all. The volume is small enough that using the topsoil-compost mix throughout is not a significant waste, and adding rubble would reduce the already limited root space. In that case, simply fill with the same mix, but still avoid using pure compost because it will slump.
Reusing spent compost in a raised bed
Use spent potting compost as part of the organic component, rather than as a substitute for the mineral soil. Remove roots and debris, and do not reuse material known to contain soil-borne disease, persistent pests or herbicide contamination in a new vegetable bed. A universal mixing ratio cannot account for different starting materials. Mix gradually and check that the result holds moisture without becoming dense and airless.
Mixing the final growing layer
For the top 30–45cm, aim for a soil-based mix rather than pure compost. A bulk bag of screened topsoil is usually cheaper per litre than bagged compost and provides the stable mineral fraction. Mix it with your own garden compost, leafmould or well-rotted manure, and choose the mix for the starting soil; adding a small amount of sand does not reliably fix heavy clay. If you are filling a bed on a hard surface, the RHS recommends a slightly different mix: three parts organic matter, four parts sharp sand and seven parts topsoil, with extra drainage holes in the sides. Do not be tempted to use only compost, even if it is free from your heap; it will shrink, and the bed will need topping up far more often.
When buying topsoil, check that it is screened and free from perennial weed roots. Ask the supplier whether it has been tested for contaminants if you plan to grow edible crops. Avoid using soil from unknown sources that may contain herbicide residues.
Practical checks before you fill
Before adding any base material, make sure it is free from perennial weeds such as bindweed or couch grass, and from diseased plant material. If you are using woody prunings, avoid walnut or other allelopathic species if you plan to grow sensitive plants. Firm each layer as you go to reduce later settling, but do not compact the topsoil. If you are reusing spent compost, check for vine weevil larvae; birds may remove some exposed larvae, but this does not ensure pest-free compost. Finally, remember that raised beds dry out faster than open ground, so plan to mulch the surface after planting to conserve moisture.
