Boundary-wire and wireless robot mowers define their working area in different ways. The better installation depends on your lawn, the model and the way you expect the garden to change. A wire-free label does not mean there is no site preparation.

What a boundary wire does
A wired installation uses a perimeter cable to define where the mower may work. The cable follows the model’s specified distances from edges and obstacles, with any required islands or guide wires. Those distances are not interchangeable between machines.
You need enough compatible cable, connectors and fixing pegs for the actual route, not simply the lawn’s area. Record the route so later edging, aeration or planting does not damage it. A broken connection or cable fault may require tracing and repair before mowing resumes.
What wireless installation involves
Some wire-free systems use satellite positioning with correction data to create virtual boundaries. Other products use different combinations of cameras and sensors. Check the technology of the exact machine rather than treating wireless as one uniform system.
Husqvarna’s installation guidance describes creating virtual working areas through its app on compatible models. The setup still requires a suitable charging location, a supported mapping process and the required positioning or connectivity conditions. A reference station or additional accessory may be necessary for some configurations.
Survey the awkward areas first
Walk narrow passages, tree-covered sections, areas beside tall walls and changes in lawn level. Compare each with the installation manual. For a satellite-based mower, inspect sky visibility and how the model deals with weak positioning. For a wired mower, check cable routing and the permitted passage dimensions.
A pond, drop or access to a road may require a physical barrier regardless of the navigation method. Follow the manufacturer’s safety clearances and barrier instructions. Sensors and a digital boundary are not a reason to omit required protection.
Think about future changes
A virtual boundary can be easier to redraw when a bed moves, but the mower must support the change and still navigate reliably. A physical wire may need moving or extending. Conversely, a garden with difficult satellite reception may suit a compatible wired model better than a poorly supported wireless installation.
Include installation parts, dealer help, connectivity requirements and maintenance in the comparison. Verify any subscription or network requirement for the exact UK model at the time of purchase; these are not universal across the category.
Validate the finished setup
Observe the initial runs at boundaries, passages and the return to the dock. Keep people and pets clear as directed and use an operating schedule appropriate to wildlife. Do not leave a new installation to run unattended until the manufacturer’s setup checks are complete.
Save the installation plan and model information. Reliable everyday mowing depends on matching the machine to the site, not only choosing the newest boundary technology.
