Using rainwater for seedlings and edible crops

Rainwater is often the best water for edible crops, but seedlings need a different approach. The key practical distinction is between using clean mains water for vulnerable seedlings and appropriately managed stored rainwater for established crops. Stored rainwater can harbour damping-off diseases that kill young seedlings, while established vegetable and fruit plants generally benefit from rainwater’s soft, low-mineral character.

Why rainwater suits edible crops

Rainwater is naturally soft and low in dissolved minerals, with a pH that suits most plants. This matters for edible crops in two ways. First, hard mains water can raise soil pH over time, which affects nutrient availability for many vegetables and fruit. Second, acid-loving edible plants such as blueberries, cranberries and lingonberries do better with rainwater than with hard tap water. Check moisture within the crop’s active root zone, taking care not to damage roots. For seedlings and shallow-rooted crops this is much nearer the surface than a spade’s depth. Water the soil around the roots slowly enough for it to soak in, avoiding splashes onto edible leaves and fruit. Wash harvested produce thoroughly with clean running water before preparing or eating it.

  • Leafy crops such as lettuce, chard and cabbages need water at every stage, but especially when hearts begin to form.

  • Soft fruit such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries should be kept well-watered through flowering, fruit set and harvest. Currants and gooseberries are less sensitive but still dislike prolonged dry conditions.

What not to use on edible crops
