Large lightweight planters are easier to position when empty, but the growing medium and water usually add much more weight than the shell. Compare the finished planting as well as the pot material, especially where access, moving or balcony loading matters.

Start with usable dimensions

Products described as fibre, resin or composite vary widely. Compare their actual weight, construction and outdoor warranty rather than assuming one material name guarantees frost resistance or durability. Check whether handles are rated for carrying the pot when planted.
Stability and drainage
A tall, narrow planter carrying a leafy shrub may be unstable in wind even if the empty pot is easy to lift. Choose a suitable base width and a sheltered location. Do not add improvised heavy ballast without accounting for support, drainage and the effect on root space.
Drainage holes need to remain open. A decorative outer pot may be intended to hold a separate nursery pot and may have no drainage of its own. Do not leave the inner pot standing in accumulated rainwater.
Plan moving before filling
Position the pot before planting and allow access for watering and maintenance. A rated pot trolley may help on a level surface, but thresholds, slopes and steps can make a filled container unsafe to move. Never rely on an ornamental lip as a lifting handle.
For balconies and roof terraces, confirm the permitted loading and placement with the responsible building professional. An empty weight advertised as lightweight does not establish that a large planted container is suitable for the structure.
