Choose balcony planters by their filled weight, stability and secure placement, not just their empty weight or appearance. Wet compost, mature plants and retained water add to the load. Before buying large containers or fitting anything to a railing, check the building’s rules and confirm what the structure and fixing points can support.

Confirm the permitted load and position

RHS balcony guidance recommends consulting a chartered structural engineer or surveyor when structural suitability is uncertain. Ask about both total load and where it may be placed. Do not guess that a spot beside a wall or above a visible beam is suitable: balcony construction varies.

Keep escape routes, doors, drainage outlets and maintenance access clear. Plan for people and furniture as well as plants. A planter should not obstruct a safety barrier or give children an easy climbing step beside the edge.

Compare the complete planted weight

Plastic, fibreglass and some metal pots can weigh less than stone or terracotta, but large volumes of compost may dominate the final load. Compare the actual internal volume, empty weight and intended use. A decorative shell with a false base needs enough real rooting space for the chosen plant.

Use a suitable peat-free container compost and keep drainage holes open. Do not add stones, rubble or polystyrene as a supposed drainage layer. A lighter pot does not establish that the whole planted arrangement is safe for the balcony.

Choose a stable shape

A broad, low planter is usually easier to stabilise than a tall narrow pot carrying a large canopy. Wind can accelerate drying, scorch foliage and overturn poorly secured containers. Start with compact plants matched to the site’s sun and exposure.

Use only an approved fixing system compatible with the container and building. Do not improvise ties to rails, drill the waterproofing or add a wind-catching screen without permission and a suitable installation design. For rail-mounted boxes, confirm the bracket fit, rated wet load and locking arrangement; keep planting on the inside wherever the approved design permits.

Make watering and inspection easy

Place containers where you can reach the compost and maintain the plants without leaning over the edge. Check moisture frequently in warm or windy weather. Arrange runoff so it does not collect around outlets, damage the building or fall onto people below.

Inspect brackets, ties, cracks and drainage after strong winds and as plants grow. The mature plant presents a larger wind load than the small nursery plant. If the maker requires seasonal removal or storm precautions, plan a safe place to store the box before filling it.
