How to improve sandy soil and retain moisture

Sandy soil is easy to cultivate and warms up quickly in spring, but it has a serious drawback: it tends to retain less water and fewer nutrients than finer-textured soils. Organic matter helps sandy soil retain moisture. You can incorporate it when preparing bare ground or apply it as a surface mulch; established beds can benefit without digging through their roots. This article explains how to do both, based on RHS guidance.

Why sandy soil loses moisture

Sandy soils have a high proportion of sand particles (0.05–2mm) and very little clay. The large spaces between sand grains allow water to drain rapidly after rain or watering. Sandy soils are also low in plant nutrients because soluble nutrients are quickly washed out by rain. They warm up faster than clay soils in spring, but they dry out quickly and often need frequent watering in summer.

How organic matter helps

Organic matter – sometimes sold as soil improver or soil conditioner – binds loose sand particles into more stable crumbs or aggregates. These crumbs create smaller pore spaces that hold moisture and provide binding sites for nutrients, reducing the amount washed out by rainfall. As organic matter decays, it also releases plant nutrients slowly. Regular additions therefore improve both water retention and fertility in sandy soil.

Digging in organic matter as a soil improver

For sandy soil, one option when preparing an empty bed is to incorporate well-rotted organic matter into the topsoil. For an established or no-dig bed, use surface applications instead. Suitable materials include garden compost, composted green waste, composted bark, leafmould and well-rotted manure. Avoid using fresh or partially rotted materials, as these can temporarily lock up nitrogen as they break down.

When to apply

Sandy soils are best manured from late winter, typically February or March in most of the UK, just before plant growth starts. Applying just before active growth reduces the time soluble nutrients are exposed to leaching before plants can use them. Avoid applying organic matter in late summer, because warm soil causes rapid breakdown and the soluble nutrients released can be leached away by winter rain.

How much to use

As a soil improver, apply about 5–10kg per square metre, which is roughly half to one 15-litre bucketful. This is an approximate equivalence, not a reliable conversion for every material: weigh a filled bucket if using a weight-based rate, or follow the supplier’s volume guidance. Spread the material evenly and then dig or fork it into the soil.

How often to repeat

Organic matter decomposes over time, so a single application is not a permanent fix. On cultivated sandy soil, applying organic matter every year or every other year will gradually build up levels. Assess soil condition, crop performance and any soil analysis before adding more; a single organic-matter percentage is not a universal stopping point.

Mulching to retain moisture

The second key technique is to cover the soil surface with a thick layer of organic matter. A mulch reduces evaporation, keeps the soil cooler in summer, suppresses weeds, and as it slowly breaks down it adds further organic matter to the soil. For sandy soil, mulching is one of the most effective ways to hold onto moisture between rain events.

When to mulch

The best time to mulch is late winter or early spring, before weed seeds germinate and while the soil is still moist from winter rainfall. Delay mulching if the soil is frozen or waterlogged. Applying mulch to moist soil traps that moisture and prevents it from evaporating as temperatures rise.

How deep and how much

Spread a layer at least 5cm (2in) deep, but ideally 7.5cm (3in). One cubic metre covers 20 square metres at 5cm depth or about 13.3 square metres at 7.5cm, before settling. For smaller areas, about 50 litres of mulch per square metre gives a 5cm layer; for a 7.5cm layer, use 75 litres per square metre. A 70-litre bag covers about 1.4 square metres at 5cm or 0.93 square metres at 7.5cm.

How to apply mulch

  • Dig out perennial weeds before mulching; low-growing annual weeds can be smothered by the mulch.
  • Tip or shovel small piles of mulch onto bare soil between plants, working from the back of the border forward.
  • Spread the mulch evenly with a rake or garden fork, keeping the layer at least 5cm deep.
  • Use your hands to spread mulch under shrub branches and around delicate emerging plants.
  • Leave a 10cm (4in) mulch-free circle around woody stems to prevent damp-induced rotting.

Choosing the right organic matter

Home-made garden compost or leafmould are usually the best options because they are free and well-rotted. If you need to buy material, look for products labelled soil improver, soil conditioner, composted bark or well-rotted manure. Check that compost or manure is mature and no longer heating. Composted bark can still contain recognisable woody pieces, so appearance alone is not a universal maturity test. Avoid using fresh potting compost as a mulch, although spent compost can be reused if you have a large quantity.

Be alert to two potential problems. First, some bought composts and manures have been contaminated with weedkiller residues; if you suspect this, withhold it and follow the RHS sensitive-plant test, comparing subsequent seedling growth with clean compost. Germination alone does not rule out damaging residues. Second, fresh manure or high-carbon materials such as bark chips can temporarily lock up nitrogen, so use only well-rotted materials when digging in, while coarse woody material used on the surface normally causes little nitrogen lock-up. Base any feeding on plant needs rather than adding fertiliser automatically.

Practical limits and checks

Improving sandy soil with organic matter is effective, but it is not a one-off cure. Sandy soil will always drain more freely than clay, and even improved sandy soil may need watering during prolonged dry spells – just less often than before. Monitor the soil by feel: if the top few centimetres are dry but the soil below is still slightly damp, watering can usually wait.

Do not try to change sandy soil by adding small amounts of clay or loam. Because clay and sand are not effective in small quantities, enormous amounts would be needed to make a real difference. Organic matter is far more practical and beneficial. Finally, remember that organic matter breaks down fastest in warm, cultivated soil, so regular top-ups are essential to maintain the improved structure and moisture retention.
