Bark mulch and compost mulch are both organic mulches, but they behave very differently in the soil. Bark mulch is woody, slow to break down and low in nutrients; compost mulch is decomposed organic matter that feeds the soil as it rots. The right choice depends on what you are growing, how often you want to reapply, and whether the bed needs feeding or just protection.

What each material does

Bark mulch is made from chipped or shredded bark and woody prunings, often sold as composted bark. It decomposes slowly, so it lasts longer and needs less frequent topping up.
