The short answer is yes, but only in limited circumstances. Gravity-fed irrigation from a water butt can work for a small number of low-pressure drip emitters placed close to the butt and below the water level. It will not match mains-pressure performance, and many standard irrigation components will simply fail to operate.

Why gravity-fed pressure is so low
Gravity-fed systems rely on the weight of water above the outlet. The pressure available is roughly 0.1 bar for every metre of vertical height between the water surface and the emitter. For example, an assumed 0.5 m height difference provides about 0.05 bar static pressure before friction losses; 1 m provides about 0.1 bar. Measure your installation rather than assuming its head from the tank capacity.

- Use wide-bore supply pipe. Narrow pipe creates more friction. 13 mm or larger supply tubing is a common choice, but check the manufacturer’s guidance for low-pressure use.
- Keep the run short and avoid sharp bends. Every fitting and bend reduces pressure.
- Choose low-pressure emitters. Look for drippers explicitly rated for gravity feed or with a minimum pressure below 0.1 bar. Avoid pressure-compensating drippers unless the manufacturer confirms they work at your head height.
- Fit a filter. RHS advice recommends a filter to prevent leaves and debris entering the water butt. Debris will clog small emitter openings quickly under low pressure.

If you need more than a few drippers, longer runs, sprinklers, or reliable automation, a submersible pump is the practical solution.
