Ericaceous compost is a specialist potting medium formulated for plants that need acid soil. It is not a general-purpose compost, and it is not a soil amendment for garden beds. Which plants need ericaceous compost?
The short answer is any plant that will not thrive in neutral or alkaline soil. The RHS lists rhododendrons, camellias, heathers and blueberries as typical ericaceous plants. Water quality matters as much as compost. In hard water areas, the alkalinity of tap water can gradually raise compost pH. Use rainwater from a butt whenever possible. If rainwater runs out, use tap water rather than let plants wilt. The RHS permits a month or two of summer tap-water use for rhododendrons, but tolerance depends on the plant and local water quality.
Feeding should use a liquid fertiliser formulated for ericaceous plants. Do not use general-purpose feeds that contain lime or are designed for alkaline soils. Follow the manufacturer’s dilution instructions, and do not exceed the recommended rate, as ericaceous plant roots can be sensitive to over-fertilising.
What about acidifying garden soil?
If you want to grow ericaceous plants in the ground and your soil is alkaline, you could try acidifying it with sulphur. The RHS advises that sulphur is the most common acidifying material, but it takes weeks to months to work, and soils rich in clay or organic matter need more. If free lime or chalk is present, the soil cannot realistically be acidified. For most gardeners, containers with ericaceous compost are simpler and more reliable.
Signs your ericaceous plant is not getting what it needs
Yellowing between the leaf veins, especially on younger leaves, is a classic sign of iron or manganese deficiency caused by high pH. Poor growth and bud drop have other causes too, including drought, waterlogging and root problems. Check those conditions alongside compost pH and your water source before diagnosing a nutrient deficiency. Switching to rainwater and repotting into fresh ericaceous compost often helps, but do not over-fertilise in an attempt to fix the problem.

- Using ericaceous compost for all plants. Many garden plants tolerate or prefer mildly acidic to neutral conditions. Use the plant’s actual requirements rather than applying ericaceous compost universally.
- Digging ericaceous compost into garden soil to acidify it. This does not reliably lower soil pH. Use sulphur or other acidifying materials if you must acidify garden soil, but only after testing and with caution.
- Ignoring water hardness. Even the best ericaceous compost will be undermined by constant watering with hard tap water.
- Assuming all peat-free ericaceous composts are identical. Check the label for pH range and ingredients. Some may contain added John Innes loam; others are soil-less. Both can work, but management differs.
