Robot lawn mower slope ratings: how to measure your garden

Robot mower slope ratings are usually expressed as a percentage gradient, not degrees. Measure the steepest parts of the lawn and compare them with the exact model’s limits for both the working area and its boundary. These can be different, and a steep edge may rule out an installation even when the mower can climb the main slope.

Calculate percentage gradient

Use this formula: gradient (%) = vertical rise ÷ horizontal distance × 100. Both measurements must use the same units. A rise of 15cm over a horizontal distance of 100cm is a 15% gradient. A 100% gradient is 45 degrees, so a 45% rating does not mean a 45-degree slope.

Measure with a level board

  1. Choose a short section along the steepest direction of the slope. Do not stand where footing is unsafe.
  2. Place one end of a straight board at the higher point and hold the board horizontally, checking with a spirit level.
  3. Measure the horizontal distance along the board and the vertical gap from its lower-slope end down to the ground.
  4. Divide the vertical measurement by the horizontal measurement and multiply by 100.
  5. Repeat at steep patches, boundary approaches, turns and routes to the dock. Keep the largest relevant measurements.

Measure the horizontal span, not the distance along the sloping ground. A long average measurement can hide a short, much steeper bank, so inspect changes of gradient as well as the overall slope.

Allow for the lawn surface

A gradient rating does not guarantee grip in all conditions. Wet grass, muddy turns, loose soil and holes can cause slipping or damage. Follow the manual’s weather restrictions and correct problem areas before relying on unattended operation. Exclude a slope that exceeds the approved limit rather than trying to force the mower up it.

Use the specified barriers and setbacks near drops, roads and water. A boundary signal or obstacle sensor is not a substitute for required physical protection.

Use accessories and settings only as approved

A compatible terrain kit may improve traction, but does not automatically increase the manufacturer’s slope rating. Check compatibility before purchase. Guide-wire angles, transport paths and systematic mowing directions are also model-specific; the advice for one navigation system may differ from another.

Keep wheels clean using the method permitted in the mower manual. Switch off and isolate the mower as instructed before cleaning or clearing obstructions, and do not use a hose unless that model permits it. Repeated slipping or error messages need diagnosis; they are not proof that a slope alone is the cause.
