Why your compost is not breaking down

If your compost heap looks unchanged after several months, the most likely reason is that the bacteria, fungi and invertebrates that do the decomposing are not getting what they need. They require air, moisture, warmth and a roughly balanced supply of nitrogen-rich green waste and carbon-rich brown waste. When one of those is missing, the process slows or stops. The fix is usually to diagnose which condition is out of balance and correct it, rather than to add a commercial activator.

Check the moisture level first

Compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge. If it is soggy and smells unpleasant, there is too much water and too little air. This often happens when too many grass clippings or kitchen peelings are added in one go, or when rain gets in because the bin has no lid or cover. Excess water fills the air spaces and restricts the aerobic organisms that normally break down the heap.

To fix a wet heap, cover it to keep rain out, and mix in dry brown material such as shredded paper, cardboard with tape removed, chopped woody prunings, woodchip or straw. Avoid adding more grass clippings until the heap is drier. If the heap is dry and fibrous with little decomposition, the opposite is true: too little moisture and too much brown material. Water the heap in dry weather and mix in more green waste such as annual weeds, veg peelings or leafy debris.

Look at the green and brown balance

Green materials are soft, leafy and rich in nitrogen; brown materials are dry, woody and rich in carbon. The microorganisms work best when green waste makes up roughly 25–50 per cent of the heap and brown waste the remaining 50–75 per cent. A heap that is mostly grass clippings or kitchen waste can turn slimy and smelly, while a heap that is mostly dry stems, cardboard and woody prunings will sit almost unchanged because there is not enough nitrogen to feed the decomposers.

If your heap is wet and smelly, add more brown material. If it is dry and fibrous, add more green material. Chop or shred long stems and prunings before adding them, and tear up paper and cardboard, because smaller pieces break down faster.

Turn the heap to add air

Composting is an aerobic process for the most part. When material becomes compacted or waterlogged, air is squeezed out and anaerobic conditions develop, which stall the heap and cause bad smells. Turning or mixing the contents introduces air and also lets you check the moisture level. If possible, turn the heap several times a year. You can empty the bin and refill it, move the contents to a second bin, or simply fork through and stir the material every few months. If you have not turned the heap for a long time, the first turn may be hard work, but it usually improves results.

Check the size and siting of the bin

Bins smaller than about 1 cubic metre (1.3 cubic yards) tend to be less efficient because they do not retain warmth as well, although they can still make compost slowly. If your bin is very small and you are adding only small amounts at a time, it may never become noticeably hot, but cool composting can still proceed. A sheltered spot in partial or full shade is best, because extreme temperature and moisture swings slow the microorganisms. Standing the bin directly on soil allows worms and other soil organisms to enter and helps drainage. If the bin is on a hard surface, follow the bin’s instructions for starting it; microbes already present on the waste can decompose it without a commercial starter.

Consider the time of year and how long it has been

Composting is faster in warm weather and slows down over winter. Garden compost can take between six months and two years to reach maturity, and larger quantities tend to compost more efficiently than small amounts. If you started the heap in autumn and are checking in February, it may simply be too cold for rapid breakdown. Woody chippings are particularly slow: they can take three to four years to break down into crumbly compost unless mixed with plenty of nitrogen-rich material such as lawn mowings. If your heap contains a lot of unshredded woody prunings, that alone can explain why it appears not to be breaking down.

What to do if nothing seems to work

First, check the feel and smell. A healthy heap should be moist but not wet, and should smell earthy rather than sour. If it is wet and smelly, add brown material and turn it. If it is dry and fibrous, water it and add green material. If it is compacted, turn it. If it is cold and small but gradually changing, allow more time. A larger batch can retain more heat, but an oversized, mostly empty bin will not solve the problem. Avoid adding lime or commercial compost accelerators: the RHS advises that lime provides no benefit, and the process will generally run smoothly without activators if the green-brown balance and aeration are right.

Any uncomposted bits left when the rest is ready can be sieved out and added back to the next batch, where they will reintroduce microorganisms to the new material.
