Raised beds near trees: light, roots and water competition

A raised bed near a tree needs careful siting: the tree may shade crops, intercept rain and send roots into the new growing medium. More importantly, excavating or adding deep soil over an established tree’s roots can damage the tree itself. Before choosing a frame, decide whether a bed can be positioned without changing the tree’s root environment. Often the better location is farther from the canopy, while the ground beneath is planted at its existing level with suitable shade plants.

Protect the tree before planning the bed

Tree roots can extend beyond the canopy, and many absorbing roots lie close to the surface. The canopy edge is therefore not a reliable construction boundary. Do not dig a trench through roots, cut roots to fit a frame, or pile raised-bed fill against the trunk. Soil added over roots can restrict air exchange, while excavation can remove feeding roots and affect anchorage.

If the proposed bed overlaps established roots, obtain advice from a qualified arboriculturist before changing levels or installing foundations. A plastic root barrier is not a simple workaround: installing it may sever roots, and a waterproof base can create drainage problems. A freestanding planter elsewhere may offer a separate root zone, but its supports and filled weight must also avoid damaging the tree’s rooting area.

Map the light through the growing season

Observe the site in the morning, around midday and later in the afternoon. Record periods of direct sun rather than relying on how bright the spot looks at one visit. Photographs help track moving shadows, but automatic camera exposure means they are not an accurate light meter.

Deciduous trees may leave a bright window before spring leaf emergence, followed by much heavier summer shade. Evergreen and low spreading canopies may restrict planting to their outer edges. A south-western position can receive more light and wind-driven rain in some UK gardens, but buildings, neighbouring trees and the shape of the canopy can change that pattern.

Most fruiting vegetables need good sunlight. Leafy crops may tolerate some partial shade, depending on the crop and season. If the intended spot remains deeply shaded, an ornamental woodland planting is usually more realistic than trying to compensate for low light with extra fertiliser.

Check whether rain reaches the roots

A leafy canopy can intercept rain, and the tree also takes water from the soil. A shower recorded elsewhere in the garden does not prove that the bed has been watered. After rain, check moisture beneath the surface in the proposed location and compare it with a more open area.

There is no dependable rule to double watering or add a fixed percentage beneath trees. Water use changes with tree species, canopy cover, crop size, soil and weather. For an existing bed, inspect the active root zone before watering. Apply water slowly, let it soak in, then check that it has reached the roots rather than only wetting the surface or running down a gap.

A suitable surface mulch helps reduce evaporation. Keep mulch away from the tree trunk and plant crowns, and do not use repeated deep top-ups to disguise an unsuitable bed location. Newly introduced shade plants still need establishment watering during dry spells.

Bed depth does not prevent root competition

An open-bottomed frame is not isolated from nearby roots. Trees may grow into moist, fertile fill, but deeper sides do not create a protective buffer. Adding more soil after roots appear can compound the original problem.

If a separate bed can be safely sited, choose its usable growing depth for the crop and drainage arrangement. Around 30cm can suit salads and strawberries; larger permanent plants generally need more room. On open ground, count suitable soil beneath the frame as part of the root zone. None of these dimensions authorises burying existing tree roots.

Choose plants for shade and moisture together

Shade tolerance is not the same as drought tolerance. The RHS lists plants such as epimediums, bergenias, hardy cyclamen and some mahonias for appropriate positions beneath trees, but species, mature size and soil requirements differ. Start with small plants that can be established with minimal disturbance, following tree-care advice where roots are dense.

Moisture-loving hydrangeas are a poor default for very dry shade. Acid-loving pieris needs suitable pH as well as light and moisture. Test the soil before selecting lime-sensitive plants rather than assuming all woodland conditions are acidic. Dense conifer shade may support very little planting, even with attentive watering.

Choose the site before buying materials. A safely positioned bed with appropriate crops is easier to manage than one that relies on repeated root cutting, soil additions or extra watering beneath an unsuitable canopy.
