What is leaf mould?
Leaf mould is the crumbly, dark material left after fallen leaves have decayed slowly over one to two years. Unlike garden compost, which is made from a mix of green and brown waste and breaks down through microbial activity at higher temperatures, leaf mould is produced mainly by fungi acting on leaves alone. The result is a low-nutrient but excellent soil conditioner: it improves soil structure, helps sandy soils hold water and helps clay soils drain, and it can be used as a mulch or potting mix ingredient.
It is not a fertiliser. Leaf mould contains relatively little nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium, so plants mulched or top-dressed with it will still need feeding if they are hungry. Its value is physical rather than nutritional.
Which leaves make the best leaf mould?
All fallen leaves and conifer needles will eventually break down, but some are far easier to work with than others. Oak, beech and hornbeam leaves rot down with little help and produce an excellent, fine-textured mould. Thick leaves such as sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut are much slower, so shred them first or add them to the compost heap after shredding. Conifer needles can take two to three years to decay, so conifer hedge clippings are usually better in the compost heap. Pine needles are worth keeping separate: they produce an acidic leaf mould that suits ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, Pieris and blueberries.

Collecting autumn leaves
Start in autumn, when deciduous trees drop most of their leaves. Dry, still weather makes collection easier. If it is windy, rake in the direction the wind is blowing and gather leaves with leaf boards or a lawn vacuum. Leaf boards are simply two rectangular pieces of plywood or plastic that let you scoop up larger volumes by hand.
Collect leaves from your own garden or from quiet streets and side roads. Leaves gathered beside main roads may be affected by atmospheric pollution, so avoid those if you can. Street leaves can also contain litter and rubbish, so sort through them before adding them to your pile.
If you collect leaves from a lawn with a rotary mower, the mower shreds them and mixes in grass clippings, which speeds rotting and adds a little nutrient value. This is a useful shortcut for large lawns.

Bag method
Place leaves into a bin liner or a jute leaf sack. If the leaves are dry, moisten them lightly. Make ventilation holes in an empty plastic bag before filling, keeping hands clear of the tool; breathable jute sacks do not need ventilation holes. Tie the top loosely and stack the bags out of sight. Leave them for up to two years. This method takes up little space and is ideal for small gardens.
Bin method
Make a square or round frame from chicken wire or similar mesh, supported at the corners or at intervals with stakes or bamboo canes. Site it in a sheltered part of the garden so the leaves are not blown away. Fill it as full as possible, because a larger heap retains moisture and warmth better and decays faster. Moisten the pile periodically if it becomes dry, and turn it occasionally to aerate the leaves and speed breakdown.
Most leaves take about two years to break down into usable leaf mould. Conifer needles may take two to three years. Pine needles are shed throughout the year, especially in spring, so gather them gradually into a separate pile.
Using leaf mould
Well-rotted leaf mould that is more than two years old can be used as a seed-sowing compost on its own, or mixed equally with sharp sand, garden compost and good-quality soil to make a potting compost. Younger leaf mould, or poorer-quality material, is best used as a mulch, a soil improver dug into beds, an autumn top-dressing for lawns, or a winter covering for bare soil.
As a mulch, apply a layer at least 5cm (2in) deep around established plants, keeping it clear of woody stems and plant crowns. As a soil improver, dig it into the soil. Leaf mould is not a fertiliser, so you may still need to apply a balanced feed if plants need nutrients.
Common problems and limitations
- Weed seeds: leaf mould heaps can be colonised by weeds and their seeds. Avoid using leaf mould on areas where weed seeds would be a particular problem.
- Slow breakdown: if the pile is slow to rot, turn it regularly to aerate the leaves, and moisten it in hot, dry weather. Dry leaves stop decaying.
- Contamination: street leaves may contain litter, glass or dog waste. Sort carefully before adding them.
- Not all leaves are equal: thick leaves and evergreens need shredding or are better in the compost heap. Conifer needles take years.
- Low nutrients: leaf mould will not feed plants. It improves soil structure, so assess plant needs and soil fertility separately rather than automatically adding fertiliser.
