Lawn top dressing is a light application of suitable sand, loam and organic material, brushed into the grass or aeration holes. It can help with minor surface irregularities and soil improvement. Choose a mix for the existing soil and the purpose of the work; a sand-heavy dressing is not an automatic cure for every poorly drained lawn.

Decide what the dressing is for
After aeration, dressing can be brushed into the holes. Around a repaired turf patch, it can fill small edge crevices. Very shallow hollows can sometimes be improved through light applications while the grass grows through. Deeper dips are better addressed by lifting turf and correcting the level underneath.
If the lawn stays soggy, investigate compaction, soil structure and drainage first. Adding material at the surface cannot guarantee water will pass through an impermeable layer beneath it.

Prepare without unnecessary disturbance
Mow at a suitable height and remove loose debris. Scarify only if excessive thatch or moss needs removal, and aerate where compaction warrants it. These are separate treatments, not mandatory preliminaries to every small turf repair.
Work when grass is actively growing and the ground is moist but not waterlogged. The surface and dressing should be dry enough to spread and brush evenly. Early autumn commonly offers a useful window; spring can also suit suitable conditions.
Apply lightly and check the result
- Measure the area and use the product’s rate. For its autumn aeration mix, the RHS suggests about 2–3kg/m² as a guide; the amount your lawn accepts depends on the holes and surface.
- Distribute small quantities evenly, rather than leaving heavy piles.
- Brush the material down into the grass and aeration holes with a broom or the back of a rake.
- Keep grass leaves visible and avoid burying their growing points. Remove excess that will not brush in.
- Allow the grass to recover before considering another application to a shallow dip.
A shovel or handful is an inconsistent measure. If a product is sold by volume, use its stated coverage rather than converting kilograms to litres without knowing its density.
Support recovery
Water gently if conditions require it, especially around repaired turf or new seed. Keep heavy traffic off vulnerable areas and resume mowing once the surface is firm, the dressing has settled and the grass can be cut without disturbing the repair.
Feed only where needed, using a product suitable for the season and any newly sown seed. Top dressing does not automatically create a fertiliser requirement. Review recurring puddles or sinking patches separately, because another surface application may leave the underlying cause unresolved.
