Choose greenhouse staging around the work you do, the plants’ mature size and the space needed to move safely. A useful bench is comfortable to reach, strong enough for wet pots and arranged so that plants receive light and ventilation. There is no single correct working height for every gardener.

Try the working height before buying
Test the height with the tray, pot or propagator you expect to use. The working surface may be at the top of a pot, well above the bench itself. Try sowing, lifting a full tray and reaching the back without hunching or stretching.
Check seated access if needed, including knee space and the reach to tools. An adjustable bench can be useful, but only within its stated load and stability limits. Do not raise a bench on loose bricks or unstable improvised supports.
Plan depth, aisles and lifting space
Mark the proposed footprint before ordering. Leave enough room to turn, carry a tray and reach doors, vents and taps. A deep bench against glazing may create an inaccessible strip at the back; two narrower surfaces can be easier to use in some layouts.
Calculate growing space using the actual tray dimensions, then leave gaps for air circulation and handling. Filling every centimetre with pots is rarely a practical working arrangement.
Check the load rating
Allow for containers, saturated compost, water trays and equipment together. Check both the total and per-shelf rating, and whether loads must be spread evenly. Wall-mounted shelving needs a greenhouse frame designed for that load and the correct brackets; glazing bars are not automatically suitable supports.
Place heavier items low where the staging design permits, without creating a tipping risk. Keep electrical equipment and connections in the locations its manufacturer specifies and clear of standing water.
Compare surfaces and materials

Material alone does not determine strength or how much shade the staging casts. Compare the whole design, shelf spacing and footprint, and use finishes suitable for the intended greenhouse use.
Keep light and ventilation available
Upper shelves and crowded plants can shade lower tiers. Use lower shaded areas for suitable plants or storage, rather than assuming every shelf can raise strong seedlings. Keep vents and their moving mechanisms clear, and allow room around plants as they grow.
Tall tomatoes, cucumbers or aubergines may need floor space and supports instead of several fixed shelves. Removable staging can make the transition from spring propagation to summer crops easier.
Plan for winter
Staging raises plants off the floor but does not make an unheated greenhouse frost-free. Match overwintering arrangements to the plants’ minimum temperatures and monitor with a thermometer. Any insulation or fleece should preserve safe access, ventilation and clearance from heaters.
Before the busy season, check loose fixings, shelf condition and cleaning access. A modest area of reachable, sound staging is more useful than extra tiers that are too shaded or awkward to maintain.
