Once the tomato crop is finished, clearing plants and cleaning their equipment makes the next growing season easier. Treat plant residues, used compost, pots and supports as separate jobs: each may need a different approach if disease was present.

Finish harvesting before clearing
Pick usable fruit before removing plants. Note which varieties grew well, how many plants the space accommodated and any recurring problems. Photograph unusual symptoms if you need help identifying them. A vague memory of yellow leaves is not enough to choose a disease-control measure months later.
Remove ties carefully and lower long stems in sections so they do not pull on greenhouse frames or neighbouring plants. Take out canes and labels as you go. Keep sharp wire and plastic clips out of the compost heap.
Separate healthy and diseased material

Remove old root masses and check pots for cracks, blocked holes and damaged handles. Reusable pots are worth keeping if they are structurally sound and can be cleaned. Do not rely on a thin, degraded grow bag to support another season’s heavy crop.
Used growing compost has a different nutrient reserve and structure from fresh compost. Healthy spent compost may have other garden uses, but it should not automatically refill next year’s tomato pots unchanged. Do not reuse known contaminated material for susceptible plants.
Wash before any disinfection
Brush off soil and wash pots and supports to remove remaining debris. Physical cleaning matters because deposits can hide pests and reduce the effectiveness of a subsequent treatment. Let equipment dry and store it where it will not immediately collect dirty soil again.
If a particular disease calls for disinfection, use a product labelled for the intended horticultural surface and follow its dilution, contact time and handling instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals. Routine clearing does not justify an improvised stronger solution.
Check the growing space
Sweep the greenhouse, clean accessible glazing and inspect irrigation outlets, ties and support points. Clear drainage routes. With ring culture, follow the system’s advice for cleaning the growing area and handling its aggregate; it is not the same as simply replacing the compost in a patio pot.
Keep reusable labels with a short record of the crop and any disease issue. Store clean tools separately from suspect plant waste. This closes the season with information you can use, rather than a pile of equipment whose condition is uncertain.
